Doris Betts was the first female full professor at UNC-Chapel Hill and the first tenured faculty member in her field of creative writing at the University. Betts joined the UNC faculty in 1966 and was named an Alumni Distinguished Professor in 1988. She wrote nine novels and short stories collections during her life. Throughout the University, in her department, and her classes, she advocated for equal rights, equal opportunities, and mutual respect.
