“UNC Housekeepers Win Settlement”
NAACP News, January 1997
In November 1996, 300 housekeepers voted in Hill Hall to accept the settlement offered by the University. Housekeepers were awarded a $600 one-time bonus and a pay raise of up to $1,700 (depending on years of service), monthly meetings with the Chancellor, and access to career training programs. This victory also inspired other people of color who worked for the Town of Chapel Hill to fight for better working conditions. Today the Employee Forum exists at UNC-Chapel Hill, a direct consequence of the HKA’s work.
