Sallie Walker Stockard Diploma

Sallie Walker Stockard’s diploma, June 6, 1898

This diploma was awarded to Sallie Walter Stockard, the first woman to graduate from UNC-Chapel Hill, in 1898. Due to her gender, she was excluded from many campus activities, including class pictures and the graduation ceremony. She earned her Master’s degree from UNC in 1900 and wrote a book on her college experience: Daughter of the Piedmont: Chapel Hill’s First Co-Ed Graduate.
