Karen Parker

Opening from Karen Parker Diary

Karen Parker’s diary, November 1963 to August 1966

Karen Lynn Parker was the first African American undergraduate woman to graduate from UNC-Chapel Hill. Parker transferred to UNC from the Greensboro Women’s college in 1963. This diary entry, written in the spring semester of Parker’s senior year, reflected on her complicated relationship with the University and her fellow Carolinians. In her diary, Parker expresses her dire isolation amidst the whiteness of the University; hence, she worries that her legacy would be a token, rather than a substantive, contribution to the history of her time.
