University Archives and Records Management Services

“University Now Has A Chapter of Pi Beta Phi”
Chapel Hill, NC: Daily Tar Heel, October 2, 1923

This issue of the Daily Tar Heel announced the establishment of Pi Beta Phi as the first fraternity for women at UNC, and the first chapter in the state of North Carolina. The organization’s founding predates the current term, “sorority.” The article refers to the ceremonies of installation, and the many prominent women who traveled to North Carolina to celebrate its establishment at UNC. The NC Alpha Chapter of Pi Beta Phi is still active in the Carolina community today.
