Fear Map of Campus

Fear Map of sexual assault on campus, 1989

North Carolina Collection

Karen Frances Falconer’s master’s dissertation “Perception of campus landscapes and fear of sexual assault: effects on female undergraduate travel behavior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,” 1989

This hand-colored map displays the results of survey-based research done as a part of UNC student Karen Falconer’s graduate thesis in 1989. For the purpose of her thesis, Falconer attempted to determine and highlight which locations on campus women felt were the most dangerous. Since then, students at UNC-Chapel Hill have joined groups worldwide to take part in annual Take Back the Night protests against sexual, relationship, and domestic violence in the form of marches, rallies and vigils. These protests continue today.
