Francisco Pimentel (1832–1893)
Cuadro descriptivo y comparativo de las lenguas indígenas de México: o tratado de filología mexicana
Mexico: Tipografía de Isidoro Epstein, 1874–1875
This language tree was based on the work of Pimentel, a literary historian and linguist who analyzed and classified the indigenous languages of Mexico. The second edition of his comparative study Cuadro descriptivo y comparativo de las lenguas indígenas de México won a gold medal from the Institut de France.
The tree represents a typological characterization of the languages, as opposed to a historical-genealogical one, and does not show how they divided from a common source. The third tree shows twenty Mayan languages, including Yucatec, which is a small branch on the left of the trunk.
