Incidents of Travel in Yucatan
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1843
Volume 1 of 2

Stephens and Catherwood returned to Yucatán a second time in autumn 1841 to document the ruins, most notably at Chichén Itzá, Kabah, Labnah, and Uxmal. When they returned to New York, they determined to produce another publication as soon as possible. The front cover of the publisher's binding for Incidents of Travel in Yucatan features a fretted motif from Kabah with the serpent hoop from the ball court at Chichén Itzá (left). The first volume impresses most with the foldout lithographic rendering of Catherwood's panoramic drawing of Uxmal (below).
