Bob Goldstein Collection

Bob Goldstein is the James L. Peacock III, Distinguished Professor in the UNC Department of Biology.  Since 2004, he has designed and produced "gig posters for scientists" advertising upcoming lectures sponsored by the Department of Biology. In “Art and Science: Merging Printmaking and Biology,” co-taught with Beth Grabowski, Goldstein shares his love of fusing science and art with students.

In the spring of 2020 Goldstein shifted his spare-time artistic focus to creating public service announcement posters to raise public awareness about pandemic issues.  The posters featured here are just a few that were displayed on telephone poles and kiosks in Chapel Hill and Carrboro.

This design is inspired by a WWI-era poster recruiting poster featuring Lord Kitchener, the British Secretary of State for War. The Kitchner poster inspired similar recruitment images in other countries at the time, including the iconic Uncle Sam, "I Want You For U.S. Army" poster.

Pray for Us Saint Anthony, May 2020

Anthony Fauci is rendered here in thousands of microscopic coronavirus-like shapes. Fauci, a physician-scientist, immunologist, and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, was a member and chief spokesperson of the White House Coronavirus Task Force under President Donald Trump. His advice to take the virus seriously by social distancing and wearing masks garnered praise and adulation from many Americans.

Do Not Ingest Disinfectants, April 2020

At a press briefing in April 2020, President Trump asked officials on the White House Coronavirus Task Force whether disinfectants could be used as a potential cure for coronavirus. The president posed the question after listening to a presentation about a study that found sun exposure and cleaning agents like bleach have an adverse effect on the coronavirus.

Covid banner image

This print, which serves as the inspiration for our banner above, features a smooth gradient of off-white to black inks (virus in off-white, vaccine in black) on black paper. The paper would fade in the sunlight, but not the inks (which are more colorfast in light), so that over a period of about four months the prints would change from an image of a virus to an image of a vaccine. Goldstein donated three of these prints at different time points in the fading process.
