Coeds Favor... And the Males Appreciate
Women’s Handbook, 1959-1960

What to wear? This eternal question faces ladies, young and old, everywhere. But at Carolina the keynote is casualness.

For Campus Activity... Going to classes in the early fall, you’ll find dark cottons, khaki skirts and cotton blouses, cock and loafers most comfortable. When the air turns cool, blazers become quite popular with the Carolina coed. If you wish, a Carolina blazer may be purchased here. As winter days appear, so do the ever-popular skirt and sweater combinations. Since rainy days descend on Chapel Hill quite often, be sure to place raincoat, umbrella and boots high on your list of “musts.”

For dates... As the Tar Heels come dashing into Kenan Stadium on those early autumn football afternoons, you’ll find heels and dark cotton dresses suitable; then as the weather turns cool, the coed turns to a wool dress and heels plus a heavy coat. Basketball season will find you switching to skirts and sweaters, socks and loafers. For evening dates, a flick downtown or in Durham, or perhaps a fraternity party again casualness – and neatness – in the form of skirts and sweaters are in order. When Chapel Hill begins to blossom in the spring, Bermudas and toreador pants are especially appropriate for treks to Hogan’s Lake or for attending picnics or fraternity outings.

For special events... Concerts, teas and special lectures are all a part of the Carolina Way of Life. For these occasions, you’ll need woolen dresses or suits and, of course, heels and hose. During the three big Germans weekends each year, coeds favor cotton or wool dresses, depending on the season, for the afternoon concerts. For the main dance in the evening, you will want a formal. Sports attire is preferred for “after the dance” parties at the fraternity houses. Occasions at Carolina rarely call for cocktail dresses, so it won’t be necessary for you to load your closet with unneeded formal wear.
