“At Carolina We Wear”, Women’s Handbook, 1957-1958

Carolina’s campus is luscious in the fall; leaves turn gold and tumble everywhere. Our Indian Summer lasts till mid-October, so you should keep this in mind while planning what to wear through Orientation and Rush. Winter cottons, particularly shirt dresses (everything from stripes and gay paisleys to monograms), are popular. Perhaps you’ll include an Ivy League, belt in the back skirt and several bright blue blouses for those early days too. Capezio-type flats are comfortable for all the necessary walking. By the way, your fall cottons will be perfect for early spring wear.

Then, suddenly, one morning you’ll see bare-branched trees, and feel a cool nip in the air. Now’s the time for tweed skirts, sweaters, tailored blouse, with loafers’ n socks which we prefer for class wear. A car coat or a camel hair polo coat is nice to top class outfits with on really cold days.

These are class clothes, you say. What’s the clue on weekends? The German Club sponsors three big weekends each year that will give you a chance to appear in your favorite formals and cocktails dresses. Dressy wools are perfect for jazz concerts. On other weekends, wool dresses are appropriate for football game, dinner afterwards, or an evening out dancing. A movie in Chapel Hill or a fraternity get-together is planned, choose a skirt ‘n sweater. Bermuda shorts are appropriate for cabin parties.

We coeds consider a raincoat a “must.” Anything goes, from waterproof tweeds and trench coats to bright oilskin slickers. Bring an umbrella and include rain boots in your packing.

Don’t forget closet furnishings, bedspreads, curtains, various odds and ends that transform a dorm room into a comfy home.

One last comment, then we leave you to begin packing. Though clothes help to make a woman lovely, your own sweet self, complete with radiant smile, will do more for you than any Paris creation.
