WAFR Recording of Bobby Seale at UNC-Chapel Hill, February 21, 1974

Bobby Seale (1936-) is an American political activist who is widely known for co-founding the Black Panther Party with Huey P. Newton in 1966. The Black Panther Party was a Marxist-Leninist and Black power political organization that practiced militant self-defense of minority communities. The Black Panther Party was most known for armed “copwatching” patrols, free breakfast program for children, as well as other community “survival programs” that provided food, clothing, and transportation. Around the time of this event, Seale ran for Mayor of Oakland, California, in 1973.

This event took place at UNC-Chapel Hill and was recorded by WAFR—a Black-owned community radio station in Durham, NC. This audio recording is digitized from a 1/4" open reel tape. The full recording includes Bobby Seale speaking at UNC-Chapel Hill as well as after speech music from WAFR. At the event, Seale recounts the Black Panther Party’s Ten Point Platform.
