Description
The history of the Penn School makes it hard to understand which position black Americans occupy in American society. When former slaves had an opportunity to openly learn about the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, they volunteered for military service and made voting a priority, managing to elect Robert Smalls, Beaufort, South Carolina native, to the United States House of Representatives in 1874. Towards the end of Reconstruction, many of these gains were erased by a wave of white terrorism and the arrival of Jim Crow.
