The way by which I came to know that the belfry was on fire, was by seeing sparks falling, but I supposed the sparks to proceed from the ball which had lodged on the top. I left my room about half after ten to examine it; upon which examination I found there was a hole of 18 or 20 inches in circumference; I then gave the alarm of fire, and there were many others who joined me; but after repeated exclamations of fire, and seeing it attracted the attention of but few; I gave it up as a bad job; I then proposed to some of the students that we should extinguish it, but they seemed to hoot at the proposition; upon which I returned to my room, and whilst coming up the steps I met a negro, and asked him where he was going, to which, he said he had been sent by some of the young men to put out the fire, I then told him to go on, and if he could not succeed to inform Dr. Mitchell, I then came to my room but finding no one in, returned almost immediately, where I found a larger collection of students than when I left. I again came to my room and two young gentlemen accompanied me, who remained in my room about 15 minutes, as soon as they left, myself, roommate, and a gentleman who remained with us during the night retired. We had not been in our beds long before some one ran in and said the belfry is on fire. I got up and looked out, and if there was a blaze it was so small as scarcely to be perceptible, for it was but very little lighter there than in the moon-light. I immediately returned to bed and must have been sound asleep in a very

short time, for it could not have been more than half an hour afterwards, when I was awakened by my roommate's calling me, and saying the belfry was in a blaze, I got up and saw immediately that his statement was undeniable, I then put my head out and cried fire in quite a loud tone, upon which a good many below me said it was worthless to make so much fuss yet, that they would all give the alarm in a short time; but by this time there were several from the other side of the passage in my room, and we gave the alarm, and those below immediately joined, and in less than 5 minute, the upper part of the belfry was in one mass of flame.

C. Hill March 6th 1845
My Dear Husband,
Like a good girl, I have commenced writing to you even the day before you told me to do so, for fear that something might prevent me at that time - if so you might consider me disobedient. I have rather a bad prospect before me for I have just commenced you see I have almost desponded at the thought of not being able to interest you. Our little village you know affords but little news that can interest gentlemen - women sometimes find a little, they think interesting, but great men I'm aware are apt to laugh at me & say we are too much pleased with trifles. Well now, what am I to do? I'll just begin from the time you left home & tell you about trifles & you may laugh if you please. I am in fine spirits to-day (the cause of which you will discover at the end of this letter) & when I feel merry, I don't care who laughs at me, so here goes ---
Of course I cried some ten or fifteen minutes after I could no longer see you - I then thought it was very silly in me to do so, therefore I called up Ben & I stayed out nearly the whole day - having shrubs & flowers put out. I kept him as busy as you did the days you made him plant your trees. I have had numbers of rose bushes & flowers of different kinds set out both in the garden & yard & since we had so good a rain which fell night before last I think they will live, or at least some of them. I had them watered twice before the rain & the greater part of the trees were watered some twice, others but once. We should have a sweet lot after a little I think. Rosa came
-----
& stayed all night with me on Tuesday & Wednesday nights - & two nights since - Mary Hall has stayed one night - so that I have made out so far tolerably well. I received your letter on Thursday morning together with the money. I was surprised to see it however & thought you had forgotten something. I sent forthwith to Mr. Collier about the potatoe planting & he promised to save me ½ bushel as the balance of the money ($10) I received a few nights ago from a black man who is working on the halls. Mother also sent the articles, I wrote for by you - all eight. I received a short note from him too from Laura - nothing new - all well & ---
On Thursday, according to appointment the Trustees met here. I am not able to give you an exact account of their proceedings. Joel told me they had two lectures that afternoon, one from Mr. Waddell, the other from a man by the name of Smith he believed. From what I could learn, they held a sort of petty Court for they say they had an officer present; they compelled Gov. Swain to swear, & gave some of the students to understand that they must swear or go to jail. They chose to swear, tho' I understand they hesitated & it has caused a good bit of talk among the students generally. Dr. Mitchell heard that there were different opinions with regard to the propriety of the thing, so he preached a sermon last Sunday from the 3rd chap. 1st v. of Paul to Titus - he said some very good things but I thought there was a part would have been better left out & I do not know what effect it had upon the students except that they paid better attention to that sermon, than they were accustomed to do. I believe that it was Tharp's & Sumner's cases that the Trustees acted upon & they are both dismissed.
The Gov. came to see us yesterday for the first time, he stayed about 5 minutes - his object I dare say was to
-----
know if he could hire Harry, shortly said he wished him to put up some paling about the Steward's Hall. I told him he could not be spared, until he had moved your buildings. I am in hopes however, that Harry will be ready as soon as the Gov. will for he inquired who got your posts. I told him & he spoke of getting some from him. I shall be sure to hire Harry out whenever I can I assure you. I believe he goes on pretty well. The crib is covered in on the sides - he has been preparing the sills & rafters for the shelters. Louisa said yesterday she thought he would be able to raise in a day or two. The new fence is made & Billy I believe has been employed & is now, making fences and/or mending them. I have heard no complaint of him nor any of them, they all seem well disposed, so far I have found enough for them to do.
Mrs. Green called to see me just now, quite sociable and cheerful. I think she improves on acquaintance. I like her more & more. I have paid only two visits since you left they [portion missing] Mrs. Hooper (the old lady) She was kicked by that horse of Cosctune's[?] more than a week since & can scarcely stand now she was in bed when I saw her Tuesday afternoon both ancles[sic] were injured but one was very badly hurt. Mr. Burton undertook to drive the horse since & she kicked again & injured his leg. Kemp got a letter from Sue on Monday morn no news I believe worth relating - she was exulting that she would have six weeks vacation from the 1st of May - there seems to be an alteration they had only four weeks last year.
Chapel Hill is increasing in population rapidly - there are 4 or 5 families residing here now that did not live here last year - stage-drivers & tailors. I heard a day or two ago that a man by the name of Perry has gone to Mrs. Snipes's with his family for the purpose of taking boarders. I should not be surprised if it is the old bed steamer. Dr. Mays & lady have taken a room
-----
at Mrs. Lucas's. I understand that Mr. Saunders (a Senior) who stuttered very badly was much improved by him. There was a show of some kind last night the man was a ventriloquist that performed. Our boys seemed to have no inclination to go at all. The performer carries about with him what he calls the King Vulture - the boys saw that gratis & were quite satisfied. I hope the Fakir taught them a lesson, they will not soon forget. I must draw to a close but not without asking pardon for not having put your slippers in the trunk. I hated it very badly when I discovered the neglect. I rather thought you would do it. I believe all your friends are well now. Charles Phillips has had the measles but is getting better.
Friday morning - All well & lively - except Junius who got a whipping because he did not wish his clothes put on. I have not bought a cow yet - have heard of two, one $17 the other $15. Wednesday-
Mr. Haywood, Dear Sir,
When I left Fayetteville my intent was to go to Virginia & return in about a week, but contrary to my expectation I was there detained so as not return until last night at which time I received two Letters from you relative to the Business of the President's House, wherein you requested an answer & an explaination[sic] of the proposials[sic] left with you; as you have been so kind as to put yourself to the trouble of writing to me with respect to the work I feel a degree of of[sic] pleasure in sending an express answer, not finding any chance of conveying a Letter without sending on purpose.
The plan you first gave, I calculated on, as doing the the[sic] work in a creditable manner, the way in which I proposed doing the said work I did suppose could not be executed, so as to give ample satisfaction to the employers & gain credit to myself for less than 1,000 pounds. This was the House 36 by 26 with a cellar under the whole of it & the Garret finished off into bed-rooms, (perhaps this I did not communicate to you) However after this it was proposed to omit a part of the Cellar & the whole of the Garret rooms, ading[sic] to the length of the House four feet, this as I observed required an abatement, I then agreed to undertake for £950. lastly in case of being underbid I concluded to say £850. which appears to be the proposial[sic] you thought was the first I had made.
This was truly a mistake but not on my part, you being so full of business at that time and none of the other commissioners present it could not be attended to so strictly as was necessary: Now Sir, the fact is this, the commissioners sho[ul]d have first made out an exact method in which the work was to be done & have given to each candidate a copy of the form.
-----
form or mode in which the work was to be done & by tha[t] means each competitor would have been on an equal footing.
My wish & Inclination was to execute the work in an Extraordinary manner, at the time that I said £1,000 but having an Idea at the same time of Lucas's way of Business by a parcil[sic] of aukward[sic] Negroes, who do not [?] tolerabl[e] wages, I thought it the only way to put myself on an equality with him to make that last reserve, that in case of the price being much reduced I would do it for £850. rather than loose it; Let me instance to you that I could Build a house the same Size &c of the one for which I charged £1,000. for ¾ of that Sum the might be Sufficiently strong; and have a better bargain than my first design would have have[sic] been at the Thousand pounds, & this I concieve[sic] is the advantage Mr. Lucas & Mr. Conroy has had of me: in counting on an inferior kind of work: In the next place Sir I have to inform you that according to the mode in which Mr. Lucas & Mr. Conroy has calculated on I am willing to do the work in the present plan a few shillings cheaper than either of them knowing myself able to build it on as good terms as any that offer, & if it is not reduc[ed] lower than £725. as you discribed[sic] in your letter having no cellar but underpined[sic] 4 feet from the surface &c; you may depend on me to do it: but at the Same time I hope Gentlemen should not know that I am determined to be below them, for they would perhaps thro[ugh] a malicious principle to me cry it conciderably[sic] lower than any person could aford[sic] to do it at. I do assure you upon the honour of a man of truth, there will nothing be made by it more than common low wages at less than £800. if the workman is faithful in performing it as he ought. The House I built for Mr. Cain I think has
-----
has not been more work than this, under the present form, & yet he is very confident he has not been out less than £1,000 on it. The time which you allow for the finishing this work I have not heard, I hope if you see cause to let me take it you will give sufficient to compleat[sic] it in as the work will be better than when hurried up with green timber, but if you have mentioned to Mr. Lucas & Mr. Conroy when it must be done I will abide by the result.
I think it will be convenient for me to make brick as I intend employing a Bricklayer by the year especially if you allow me the priviledge[sic] of a place for I wish to build there on my own Lott[sic], this you may prize as your interest as being a means of promoting the place. I hope therefore you will encourage [section missing] incline to build there shortly.
If you can give me a final answer in any short time you may Inform the bearer Frederick Collier, that he may wait for it, if not have directed him to return immediately. In case you should alter the plan you may form an Idea how much should be aded[sic] or deducted in proportion to such alteration.
My expectation is that if the lowest proposial[sic] is not less than £750 you are to allow me within a few shillings of that sum & at any rate as they are so ventursome[sic] I wish to have it; provided they are not appris'd of my determination.
I am with much respect

Description
An account of the resource
This sketch of the first president's house by Hope Summerell Chamberlain was done in 1926. At the time, it was occupied by Prof. Mitchell and had become known as Mitchell House. It was however completed in 1795 for the first President, located where Swain Hall now stands. Presidents Ker, Gillaspie, and Caldwell each lived in it. In 1809 Caldwell married Helen Hooper and moved to her house on the southeast corner of Franklin and Hillsborough streets. Afterward the first President's House became a faculty residence. Professor Elisha Mitchell and his family lived in it for many years. Hope Summerell Chamberlain was Professor Mitchell's great-granddaughter. The house was demolished in 1913.

Master:
All is well but Lucy. She is about but not very well. I am sorry I did not have the opportunity of writing sooner. I have a bad chance to write. Business is dull. I am just able to live. I have no young men to wait upon and can get into no very profitable business. If times was like they have been I could have earned good wages. I have done all I could. If you are satisfied please let your humble slave know, so that I can make farther arrangements. I lost about half my last session's wages. When the war broke out the Students volunteered and did not pay me for my labor.
My youngest child is able to sit alone. My wife has generally kept up pretty well. Provissions [sic] is very high.
Please let me know how all are. I remain your faithful obedient an humble slave.
Jerry Hooper
Give my love to all.

Chapel Hill Dec 30th 1843
To Hon D. L. Swain
Dear Sir,
Supposing that it will be agreeable to the Trustees to have this matter of the walls arranged and settled at an early date I have since you left been engaged in some measurements with reference to that object.
According to these the whole length of the wall put up by me is 212 rods in which however I do not include
1. The wall built in the first summer vacation when the business was commenced for which there was I believe a vote of the Trustees to give me a strip of land adjoining my lot.
2. One half of the wall along the side of the said strip where the ice house stands. As this wall is a boundary between my lot so enlarged and the Trustees I bear half the expense of building it.
3. The wall in front of the necessary for which as it was rendered necessary by my own want of judgment and bad management I cannot ask the Trustees for any payment.
In regard to the allowance that shall be made for the wall, I have looked to the wall built by Tinney around your garden as a standard. Those built by me are heavier - contain more cubic feet to the rod in proportion - of about 6 to five on an average. Supposing mine to be paid for at the same rate per rod as his it would amount to $742.00 which is more than I supposed or expected.
Money has been borrowed from the Treasurer of the University
-----
to the amount of $1500.00. Of this sum I received $500.00. It was obtained at about the time that these walls were built. Some were built before and some after. I have looked to them to pay that debt. If I am not allowed as much for them as will pay that debt I shall be likely to grumble. If I get so much I will make no complaint. If either the Trustees (in case you shall refer the matter to them) or yourself as their agent (if you shall think it best that you and I shall talk the matter over and determine what shall be done - as has been directed by the committee) shall see fit to allow anything now I shall of course submit to such award with the firmness of a Stoic and the patience of a martyr.
The Trustees have lying between two and three miles of the village a tract of land containing I suppose one hundred acres - though land of the Trustees having other land capable of cultivation lying adjacent to it is very apt to diminish in quantity as was the case of the 100 acres sold to Mr. Potts. That in question is fortunately very poor so that there has been little temptation to encroachment. It is all in wood with few if any trees large enough to be employed in building. I do not know that half a dozen persons besides myself are aware that the Trustees hold this property. The only use that has been made of it in half a century is to get wood for making some brick from it once. It is adjacent to property of mine. Will the Trustees be disposed to sell it at a reasonable rate? I send you this letter of which please dispose as you shall judge best and am very respectfully yours - E. Mitchell
Dec 3d 1844 in continuation. The above is a copy of a letter written about a year since as you know by which I am
-----
still willing to abide. You proposed to me to make out an account. If I were to do so and charge so much per cubic foot at the same rate that Tinney was paid the walls that have built around the college grounds exclusive of those mentioned on the first page as not taken into the account would come to very nearly 900 dollars. Now perhaps some of them are larger than they need be. The Trustees have dealt liberally with me - and I am willing to hash out old accounts in the manner proposed but I will not bring in an account for this work at some[th]ing like half its real value and be laughed [at for] a fool.
Mr. Polly desired me to consult you about the arrangements for conveying off the water from the south building. When I stated to him the objections to his plan of pipes running through the building he said it would not answer - and when I stated farther what my own plan was he said that his assistant had suggested that as the best that could be adopted. The pipes will not remove the water thrown out by the occupants of the rooms from their windows and that is what makes the puddles in which the hogs wallow and make a stink. I propose a blind ditch which the college [drawing inserted] hands could dig in a week 6 feet deep at a distance of perhaps 15 feet from the front of the building the bottom to be filled with small loose rock to the height of perhaps 3 feet and then covered over so as to make all smooth. Smaller ditches made in the same way would run up to where the water might be expected to collect and then have their mouths covered with a cut stone and small grating [drawing inserted]. It could not but keep everything neat and dry - nor could the cost be much. Over.

The circular for Benjamin has no entry for scholarship - can you direct me so that I can get the book and will you authorize me to take it. Also I do not see any circular for Strange.

Raleigh Nov. 20. 1844.
Dear Sir
In compliance with instructions heretofore received I now report that during the last year nothing has been collected by me belonging to the Trustees of the University. Several years ago the sum of $133 was paid into the Clerk's office of the County Court of Pitt the balance remaining in the hands of Benjamin Tucker adr of one Mary Harrell and the Clerk was directed by order of the Court to lend it out. At November Term 1843 of that Court I obtained an order directing the Clerk to pay the same over to me as agent of the Trustees. The payment has been delayed from time to time upon assurances of the Clerk and in my last interview with him I told him I should be compelled to bring suit upon his official bond. During the last year in the County of Martin a girl by the name of Winnifred Robason gave birth to an illegitimate child and died & shortly afterwards her child died. She was entitled to a small patrimony which was in the hands of her guardian, and has been paid over to her adr. I took out admn. on the child's estate in behalf of the Trustees and have recd. from the adr. of the mother about $175 in bond, and there is a small negro & a tract of land of little value also belonging to the estate.
-----
The settlement by me with the adr. took place only a few days before I left home. I have not collected any of the bonds except a small amount which was arranged in the payment of an acct against the child. At the request of the mother, brothers & sisters of the girl I brought up with me a memorial from them to the Trustees (which is enclosed) and which you will please lay before the Board. I would desire the Board to act upon the application as early as possible for I wish to sell the negro & land about 1 January & shall have to advertise for that purpose, and you will oblige me by apprising me of their determination immediately thereafter.
This is all the business of the University within my district of which I am informed.
Very respectfully
Yr ob servt
Asa Biggs

Dear Sir
Yours of the 18th was received this day on my return from Duplin Courts. I immediately wrote to Mr. Gillispie requesting him to have the negro alluded to, arrested & lodged in Bladen Jail, promising to pay a reasonable reward for this service.
I shall be at Bladen Court 1st Monday in August if the boy be taken by that time I shall sell him at Court, if not I shall then take steps to have him taken. I shall then also inquire as to the sale of the land made by [?] Hill Esq.
I hope to see you at next Court in Chatham to consult you on a case which may be of some importance to the Trustees of the University.

Lines composed by George Horton. 183[6]
The pleasures of a College life
With tears I leave these Academic bowers
And cease to cull the scientific flowers
With tears I hail the fair succeeding train
And take my exit with a breast of pain
The "Fresh" may trace these wonders as they smile(?)
The stream of sciences like the river Nile
Reflecting mutual beauties as it flows
Which all the charms of "College life" disclose
This sacred current as it runs refines
Whilst Byron sings and Shakespear's "mirror shines"
First like a garden flowr did I rise
When on the College bloom I cast my eyes
I strove to emulate each smiling gem
Resolved to wear the classic Diadem
But when the Freshmans garden breeze was gone
Around me spread a vast extensive lawn
Twas there the muse of College life begun
Beneath the rays of eruditions sun
When study drew the mystic forms down
And like the lamp of Nature with renown
There first I heard the Epic thunder rool
And Homers lightning darted through my soul
Hard was the task to trace each devious line
Tho' Locke and Newton bid me soar and shine
I sank beneath the heat of Franklin's blaze
And struck the notes of philosophic praise
With timid thought I strove the best to stand
Reclining on a cultivated land
Which often spread beneath a college bower
And thus invoked the intellectual shower
E'n that fond sin on whose stately crown
The smile of Courts and States shall shed renown
Now far above the noise of Country strife
I frown upon the gloom of rustick life
