Letter to Gov. James B. Hunt from W.R. Richardson, Hollister, NC, October 5, 1982 Letter to Gov. James B. Hunt from W.R. Richardson, Hollister, NC, October 5, 1982

Letter to Governor James B. Hunt, Jr., October 5, 1982
W.R. RICHARDSON, HOLLISTER, NC

The ancestral lands of the Haliwa-Saponi are located in what is now called Halifax and Warren Counties (the Haliwa name acknowledges this connection to the land). In the mid-twentieth century, W.R. "Talking Eagle" Richardson led a retribalization movement to gain state recognition and to establish a tribal center at Hollister in Warren County with the goal of improving housing, healthcare, and educational infrastructure for the Haliwa people. He was elected the tribe’s first chief.
