“I met Hoagie Gaskins, pictured on the right with the platinum blonde hair, in 1979, when I was a freshman and he was a senior at @uncchapelhill. A counsellor suggested that I needed to meet some gay people and put me in touch with the Carolina Gay Association and Hoagie.

I can still see Hoagie striding across campus to meet me. He was handsome, and I was enamored. We dated for a while, and he initiated me into gay life at UNC, but we were young and moved on to other men, other pursuits.

Five years later I found out that Hoagie was in the hospital, with AIDS. I was a nursing student and used my uniform to get into Hoagie's room at NC Memorial. Hoagie lay in a coma, alone, emaciated, and near death. Hoagie became North Carolina's first documented AIDS death.

This was long before cell phones, and I don't have any pictures of Hoagie except this one. When the Quilt came to DC in 1992, I searched for Hoagie's name and found a panel for 'Hogie Gaskins,' which may be the way he spelled his name.
