Senate Talks Equal Suffrage

(Continued from page one.)

Arguments and retorts, gentle and otherwise between the proponents and the opponents.

Senator Speight did not like the idea of women soiling their skirts in politics. He did not believe there is or will be anything in the administration of the ballot to uplift women.

“I want to tell you women,” he declared, addressing the gallery, “that you are honored now in North Carolina more and greater than you ever will be when you are down on the level with men in corrupt politics.”

Senator Cohoon reminded the Senator from Bertie that it was only a few days ago that he said in discussing the coming woman that wherever women were going he wanted to go along, too.

“But,” replied the Senator from Bertie, “I never did say to the polls.”

Senator Jonas tried a shot at the Senator then.

“Do you think, Senator,” he asked, “that the women of North Carolina can do anything wrong when they follow their preacher?” for Senator Speight is also a minister.

“No,” answered Senator Speight, “not when they follow their preacher’s advice.”
