Dear Chancellor Taylor:
I tried to take care of Dr. Murray as you wished.
I picked her up Monday morning at the home of her cousin in Durham, brought her to Chapel Hill, and took her first to town for some errands. We then went to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cole where Mr. Cole gave her a group of letters and other documents of Mary Ruffin Smith and her family. Dr. Murray in the meantime had decided that these manuscripts should be added to those Mr. Cole had previously placed in the Southern Historical Collection, and at her request he agreed that this might be done. The manuscripts are now in my office.
Mr. Charles Antle represented Mr. Temple on the visit to the Smith family cemetery in Chatham county, where Mr. Cole led the way in locating and exploring the area. Dr. Murray ad I recorded the tombstone inscriptions.
Dr. Murray and I stopped at my home in Dogwood Acres to try to wash off any oil from the plentiful poison ivy and to have lunch, went to town for more errands, ran into Guy and Guion Johnson with whom Dr. Murray had a joyous reunion, brought the manuscripts into the Library and took a quick tour of the Collection, visited Mr. Temple and the Rev. Peter Lee, and finally returned to Durham at the end of a long day. By then I too felt ready for a vacation at the beach, but was pleased with the day and I think Dr. Murray was.
Mr. Cole has been very generous and very helpful, and I think he would appreciate a letter from you. A copy of mine to him is enclosed.
Sincerely,
Carolyn A. Wallace
