In the early 2000’s, under the leadership of Union director Don Luse, the Frank Porter Graham Student Union underwent a major expansion and renovation of the original 1969 facilities. Mindful of the Union’s mission to bring the community together and to welcome all, they explored ways to incorporate cultural items into the new design. After listening to a group of Native American students and staff, the architects created a new circular beam for the main entrance, to soften the edges of the angular space and to acknowledge the importance of the circle to Native cultures. The Carolina Indian Circle and Alpha Pi Omega continue to host their meetings in the Student Union.
